Vietnam Travel eSIM Networks: Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone

3 carrier networks 185 plans tracked Updated Oct 12, 2026

Vietnam has the strictest SIM registration in South East Asia and the fastest 5G download speed in our entire data set, which is an odd combination to plan around. Viettel covers the north, Vinaphone has the headline 5G number, and the counter process is the part that decides how you buy data.

The short answer

What a Vietnam travel eSIM solves

Vietnam runs three national networks — Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone — and every travel eSIM brand we track rides all three. Viettel won Download Speed at 56.7 Mbps, Coverage at 8.4 out of 10 and Consistent Quality at 78.8% in Opensignal's August 2026 report, while Vinaphone took 5G Download Speed at 339.2 Mbps, the highest 5G figure anywhere in our data, and MobiFone won Upload Speed, Time on Network at 98.9% and Video Experience. Vietnamese rules require every local SIM to be registered in person against an original passport with a live selfie, which is why a travel eSIM bought before departure is normally the simpler route.

Why Vietnam’s registration rule is the strictest in the region

Vietnam is a cheap data market with fast networks and one unusually strict rule, and the rule is the reason this destination behaves differently from its neighbours.

Every local SIM has to be registered in person. That means the original passport rather than a copy or a photograph, and a live selfie taken at the counter, so the process cannot be completed in advance or on someone else’s behalf. There is no address or tax number requirement for a prepaid line, but the identity step itself is not negotiable and there is no remote route through it.

For a visitor the practical consequence is that the local SIM is cheap and costs you a counter visit, while a travel eSIM bought before you fly has data working the moment you clear immigration. All 10 brands we track take that second route, and our Vietnam plan ranking compares them on price and allowance.

What the counter process actually involves

The registration requirement comes from Vietnam’s telecom rules on subscriber identity, and the counter process reflects how strictly they are applied. Expect to hand over the original passport, have it recorded, and take a live photograph at the counter as part of the same transaction. A photocopy or a picture on your phone will be refused.

Where you complete it matters less than it used to. Carrier stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City handle it, and the airport counters do the same thing. The step that is genuinely missing is the online one: Vietnam does not offer a buy-now activate-on-arrival path for a local line, and the requirement follows the line rather than the physical card.

The honest case for buying locally is a long stay. A Vietnamese number is useful for ride-hailing accounts, for delivery, and for a local bank or wallet if you are staying long enough to want one. For a two week holiday the counter visit buys you very little that an eSIM cannot do.

Which Vietnamese network to ride

Vietnam is one of the destinations where the three networks genuinely diverge outside the cities, so the host network on your plan is worth checking before you buy on price.

Viettel is the network that covers the north

Viettel won Download Speed at 56.7 Mbps, Coverage at 8.4 out of 10 and Consistent Quality at 78.8% in Opensignal’s August 2026 report. Those are the broadest awards of the three, and they match the practical reputation: the northern mountains behind Ha Giang, the road up to Sapa and the karst around Ha Long Bay are where Viettel keeps a signal and the others often do not.

Vinaphone has the fastest 5G

Vinaphone took 5G Download Speed at 339.2 Mbps, which is the highest 5G figure in our entire data set and a reminder of how fast Vietnamese 5G can be where it exists. Its profile sits a band below Viettel on overall speed and coverage, so it is the better host for a city itinerary and the weaker one for a northern route.

MobiFone wins on upload and video

MobiFone took Upload Speed, Time on Network at 98.9% and Video Experience, which is a different set of strengths: staying connected and uploading rather than downloading fastest. Time on Network in particular is the measure of how rarely you fall back to nothing, and 98.9% is a strong figure for a third network.

Read the awards as a ranking and the speed bands as indicative ranges. One set comes from Opensignal’s independent measurement programme, the ranges are our own compilation from carrier listings, and the specific mast you attach to still decides what you feel.

Vietnam prepaid rules and why the local eSIM route stalls

Two Vietnamese rules shape how you buy data, and the second one is the reason this destination differs from Thailand or Malaysia.

Travel eSIM Vietnamese prepaid SIM Vietnamese carrier eSIM
ID required None Original passport plus a live selfie Original passport plus a live selfie
Registration happens Before you fly In person at a counter In person at a counter
eSIM availability Standard Rare Yes, but the same visit is required
Best for Almost every short trip Longer stays wanting a local number Residents

The registration picture is the strictest in our data. Vietnam asks for the original document and a live selfie, so the process resists the workarounds that work elsewhere, and it applies to the line rather than the format.

That last point is what makes this destination unusual. In most countries a carrier eSIM is a way around the counter, because the identity step can be done digitally. In Vietnam it cannot, so the carrier eSIM carries the same obligation as a plastic card and the international travel eSIM is the only product that does not.

5G in Vietnam and the routes that stay on 4G

All three networks run commercial 5G and every Vietnamese carrier profile we track lists it, with Vinaphone’s measured 339.2 Mbps the headline figure. What that number does not tell you is how much of the country it covers. The 5G footprint sits in the dense urban cores, and the overall download award of 56.7 Mbps describes the experience most of the country actually gets.

The gaps are geographic and predictable once you picture the map. The northern highlands behind Ha Giang, the mountain road to Sapa, the karst around Ha Long Bay away from the harbour, the Central Highlands inland from Da Nang, and the long coastal road between Nha Trang and Quy Nhon all thin out or stop. Download offline maps before any of those, and check which network your phone has chosen when you leave a city.

An eSIM is a profile your phone downloads rather than a card it accepts, a standard maintained by the GSMA, so it works with whatever bands your handset covers. The phone compatibility checker covers specific models.

Three closing notes. If your itinerary continues into Cambodia or Thailand, buy a South East Asia regional plan rather than a Vietnam-only one, because the overland crossings are common enough that a single-country plan becomes a limitation. If the north is on your route, check the host network before you buy on price — the brand table on this page lists it for every plan we track. And for everything else, our Vietnam plan ranking lists every plan we hold, the allowance calculator sizes one to your dates, and live discounts sit on the eSIM promo codes page.

Who runs the masts

The three Vietnamese networks a travel eSIM uses

Vietnamese travel eSIM data is bought wholesale from Viettel, Vinaphone or MobiFone. The brand on your plan does not operate a mast in Vietnam, so your coverage is decided by the host network and the destination rather than by the company you paid. That makes the brand table below a price list.

Viettel

5G

Typical 20–250 Mbps — enough for HD streaming · video calls · navigation

Vietnam's largest — the best coverage beyond Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, including Ha Long Bay.

Vinaphone

5G

Typical 15–200 Mbps — enough for HD streaming · video calls · navigation

Strong in the cities with good value.

Mobifone

5G

Typical 15–200 Mbps — enough for HD streaming · video calls · navigation

Solid national coverage at budget prices.

Brand by brand

Vietnamese host network by eSIM brand

Every brand we track rides all three Vietnamese networks in this destination, so the columns below are identical and the ranking is decided on price. That said, Vietnam is one of the few destinations where the host network genuinely matters outside the cities, so it is worth knowing which one your plan rests on before you commit to a northern route.

eSIM brand Host networks in Vietnam Plans
Airalo Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Airalo in Vietnam →
aloSIM Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone aloSIM in Vietnam →
Holafly Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Holafly in Vietnam →
Jetpac Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Jetpac in Vietnam →
Nomad Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Nomad in Vietnam →
Roami Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Roami in Vietnam →
Roamic Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Roamic in Vietnam →
Saily Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Saily in Vietnam →
Ubigi Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Ubigi in Vietnam →
Yesim Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone Yesim in Vietnam →

What that parity is worth. Because every brand buys the same 3 networks, none of them can sell you better coverage in Vietnam — the difference lands in the bill and nowhere else. Across the brands we track, metered data works out at anywhere from $0.60/GB to $1.45/GB, a 2.4× spread that mast choice cannot explain. Judge the plan, not the network — the full ranking sits on the Vietnam eSIM comparison.

City coverage

Vietnamese cities and the routes beyond the deltas

Vietnamese coverage follows the two deltas and the coast between them. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang are all well covered on every network. The question starts in the north, where the mountains behind Ha Giang and Sapa thin out, and on the long road down the coast.

  • Hanoi is covered on all three networks and so is the road to Hai Phong, which puts Ha Long Bay within easy reach of the city. The change comes once you turn inland: the mountain roads towards Sapa and the Ha Giang loop are where the three networks stop behaving the same way.
  • Ho Chi Minh City is the densest part of the network and all three operators cover it thoroughly. Leaving it is what matters: the Mekong Delta south and west holds coverage town to town, while the coastal road north-east towards Mui Ne and Nha Trang has long stretches between settlements.
  • Da Nang and Hoi An are covered on all three networks and sit on the coastal backbone that connects Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Heading inland from here is where it changes: the Hai Van Pass is fine, but the road up to Ba Na Hills and the mountain sections further west are patchier than the coast.

FAQ

Vietnam eSIM and network questions

Which Vietnamese network is best?

Viettel for coverage, Vinaphone for 5G speed. Viettel won Download Speed at 56.7 Mbps, Coverage at 8.4 out of 10 and Consistent Quality at 78.8% in Opensignal's August 2026 report, and it is the only network that reliably holds a signal on the northern mountain routes and around Ha Long Bay. Vinaphone took 5G Download Speed at 339.2 Mbps, which is the highest 5G figure anywhere in our data, so it wins on a city itinerary where 5G is available.

Do I need ID to buy a SIM in Vietnam?

Yes, and Vietnam enforces it harder than most of its neighbours. Registration requires the original passport rather than a copy or a photograph, and the process includes a live selfie taken at the counter, which is why the paperwork cannot be completed on someone else's behalf. There is no local tax number or address requirement for a prepaid line, but the identity step is not optional.

Can I buy a prepaid eSIM from a Vietnamese carrier?

Vietnam is stricter here than almost anywhere else, because the registration requirement attaches to the line rather than to the format. A local carrier eSIM is still a local line, so it needs the same in-person verification as a plastic one, and that removes the advantage of buying an eSIM in the first place. This is the clearest case in our data for using an international travel eSIM instead.

How fast is 5G in Vietnam?

Fast on paper and patchy in practice. Vinaphone measured 5G Download Speed at 339.2 Mbps in Opensignal's August 2026 report, the highest 5G figure in our country set, and Viettel took the overall Download Speed award at 56.7 Mbps. The gap between those two numbers is the story: 5G is available in the dense urban cores and the overall experience is a 4G one, so plan around 4G and treat 5G as a bonus.

Is unlimited data available on a Vietnam eSIM?

Yes. Several of the brands we track sell unlimited Vietnam plans alongside the fixed-allowance ones, and both appear in the same comparison. Vietnam is a cheap data market, so a mid-sized fixed allowance is usually the better value unless you stream or share the connection with a laptop, and the unlimited plans carry fair-use terms worth reading before you buy.

Is a Vietnam eSIM better value than a local prepaid SIM?

Per gigabyte the local SIM is cheaper, as you would expect in a market this price-sensitive. The eSIM wins on the registration step rather than on price. Vietnam asks for the original passport and a live selfie at the counter, which is a real interruption on arrival, and the local carrier eSIM products carry exactly the same requirement. Paying a little more to have data working before you clear immigration is the trade most visitors take here.

Which network covers Ha Long Bay and the northern mountains?

Viettel, and it is not close. The karst around Ha Long Bay and the mountain routes through Ha Giang and up to Sapa are where Viettel holds a signal and the other two frequently do not. If your itinerary includes the north, check which host network your plan lists before buying on price alone, because a cheaper plan on Vinaphone or MobiFone is the wrong trade for that route.

Does a Vietnam eSIM work in Thailand or Cambodia?

A Vietnam-only plan stops at the border, and both crossings are common enough to plan for. Cambodia is usually reached overland, which leaves a long stretch of road before the next town with signal, and Thailand is a frequent add-on at the end of a north to south itinerary. Buy a South East Asia regional plan instead if your route crosses a border, and confirm the country list before paying.
